GOOD MORNING, DEARS. It is your Madge Fenwick reporting from the local desk on a story I am told is “national” but I will be perfectly honest, the lady in question is leaving the building, and that is local news in my book.
The Labor Secretary, a Mrs. Chavez-DeRemer, is leaving her post. She is the third member of the Cabinet to do so since whenever it was that the Cabinet started, which I would have to look up, dear. My dates are a little blurry on this one.
The departure is “amid allegations.” I learned in 1973 that “amid allegations” is what we say when we have not yet been served with paperwork. It is a perfectly nice phrase. My own dear husband used it to describe our marriage during a particularly contentious autumn.
The labor portfolio includes — and I have written this down — workers, jobs, wages, and the dignity thereof. The Secretary will now be replaced. By whom? Well, dear, that is for the President to decide, and I am sure he is hard at work on it as we speak. Or possibly at the golf.
I have asked the Mayor for a comment but he is at a fundraiser. I have asked the Town Council for a comment but they are at the same fundraiser.
I will keep you posted, dear. Bless your heart.
